Rainforest
Bridgiett Thomson, Sarah Mahon, Steven Mckenzie
Threats to Ecosystem: Rainforests are cut down, cleared, and burned. More trees will be destroyed as fuel. Rivers running through forests will be dammed to generate electricity. and allow roads to be built. Underground mines will be constructed, to obtain rich natural resources below the rainforest. If such exploration of rainforests go unchecked they may never recover.
Abiotic Factors of a Rainforest
Warm climate
Rains 80 inches per years
rainforests only grow in the tropics and the temperate areas
The soil in tropical rainforests are generaly 3-4 inches thick
The temperature is usualy 75-80 degrees farenheight
rainforests have layers (emergent layer, canopy layer, understory, forest floor)
Biotic Factors of a Rainforest
Tall tree (high canopy)
Mammals (howler monkey, jaguar, sloth)
Birds (hummingbird, macaw)
Amphibians (poison arrow frog)
Reptiles (anaconda)
Fish (piranah, electric eel)
Trees have thin smooth bark
Tree leaves have drip tips so when it rains water can run off quickly so no fungus can grow in this hot humid environment
Trees have these things called buttresses which are large roots that span farther out from the tree than usual in order to support the tree
The importance of a Rainforest
Helps clean the earth's air by filtering carbon dioxide out of the air (about 40% of air in the earth’s atmosphere)2.47 acres of forest clean 1 ton of CO2 out of the air
Recycles and cleans water
Rainforests provide water vapour to the atmosphere to keep the global weather patterns stable
Conservation Plan:
We can’t live without certain supplies from the rainforests, but as long as we can let the forests grow back and not cut down every tree, the rainforests will live. The rain forest would recover if we didn’t need the resources. What we can do is let the rainforest grow back naturally. We also can’t cut down AS many trees in the forest. To keep the rainforests alive, we need to take only what we need, and make sure not to take enough to actually kill the rainforests.
